Austria Visa From UAE

The Austria visa from Dubai route is simple on paper: the Austrian Embassy in Abu Dhabi decides, and you apply in person at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The detail is in Austria's checklist, which asks for more history than most Schengen countries, including copies of all your UAE residence permits from the last ten years.

Business trips need an invitation from an Austrian company, and your NOC must be less than a month old.

In short: UAE residents apply for an Austria Schengen visa (visa C) in person at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the Austrian Embassy in Abu Dhabi decides. VFS listed the adult visa fee at AED 386 plus a AED 122.66 service fee, and your UAE residence permit must be valid three months after you leave Schengen.

What's current

Schengen rules in 2026

• Schengen fee: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, unchanged since June 2024. The service provider's fee is charged separately in dirhams.
• Entry/Exit System: fully operational since 10 April 2026. Your first entry is registered biometrically at the border instead of a passport stamp.
• ETIAS: still not running, and no applications are accepted anywhere yet. It will only ever apply to visa-exempt travellers, such as Emirati citizens, not to Schengen visa holders.
• One visa, 29 countries: a visa issued by the Austrian Embassy in Abu Dhabi lets you travel across the whole Schengen Area within its validity and permitted days.

What is a Austria Schengen visa?

An Austrian Schengen visa (visa C) allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen Area when Austria is your main destination, meaning where you spend the most days, or your first entry if the days are equal.

For stays of 91 to 180 days in Austria there's a national visa D. Stays beyond six months need a residence permit issued by the authorities in Austria.

The Schengen Area has 29 member countries, and a visa issued by one lets you move between all of them within its validity and permitted days.

These are the current conditions for a Austria visa from the UAE, as published by the Austrian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and its service provider.

• A UAE residence permit valid at least three months after your departure from the Schengen Area.
• A signed passport, issued in the last 10 years, valid three months after departure, with two blank pages.
• An application lodged at most six months and usually at least 15 days before travel.
• Insurance of at least €30,000 for medical expenses, covering all Schengen states for the whole trip.
• Documents in German or English.
• For business: an Austrian company invitation, or proof of event registration or trade relations.

Biometrics

Biometrics requirements

The VFS checklist states that every applicant over the age of 12 submits fingerprints with the application. Separately, the embassy says every applicant lodges in person, including children of any age and members of groups.

Under EU rules, applicants aged 12 and over give ten fingerprints and a digital photo when they apply. Fingerprints already stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) from an application in the last 59 months can be reused, although the mission may still ask you to attend in person.

Biometrics are now also taken at the border for your first entry under the EU's Entry/Exit System.

Appointments

Austria visa appointment process

• Book at VFS Global Austria for the Dubai or Abu Dhabi centre.
• If you need your passport during processing, the embassy says VFS can hand it back once the file has reached the embassy.
• Keep your phone and email close. The embassy may contact you during the procedure, and the checklist asks you to confirm you'll check both daily.

These are the amounts VFS Global listed on 19 September 2026. The visa fee is €90 (or €45) converted at the current rate, so dirham amounts can change. All fees are non-refundable, including after a refusal.

Processing time

VFS lists about 15 calendar days at the embassy, extendable to 60 days in exceptional cases. The embassy notes that applications from citizens of certain states can take 15 to 45 days. Transport time between VFS and the embassy isn't included, so apply well ahead.

Emirati passport holders

Visa waiver, EES and ETIAS for UAE citizens

Emirati citizens don't need a Schengen visa for Austria for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders. It replaces passport stamping for non-EU short-stay travellers, including visa holders and visa-exempt visitors such as Emirati citizens, and records your biometric data at your first crossing. Expect a registration step at the border on your first trip.

ETIAS travel authorisation

ETIAS, the EU's travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not operating yet, and no applications are being accepted anywhere. The EU says it will announce the start date several months in advance; the earlier target of late 2026 is widely reported to be slipping into 2027. Once it launches, Emirati citizens will need an approved ETIAS (fee €20, generally valid for three years) before travelling. Schengen visa holders do not need ETIAS. Only use the official EU website when the time comes.

Common reasons for delays or refusal

The EU's standard refusal form lists the grounds a mission can cite. The most common are:

• False, counterfeit or forged documents were submitted.
• The purpose and conditions of the stay were not justified.
• You did not show enough money for the stay and the return journey.
• You have already spent 90 days in the Schengen Area in the current 180-day period.
• An alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) prevents entry.
• Statements or documents were judged unreliable.
• The mission could not establish that you intend to leave before the visa expires.
• No valid travel medical insurance was provided.

Austria-specific pitfalls we see

• An NOC older than one month, or one missing leave and return-to-work dates.
• Bank statements that aren't signed and stamped by the bank.
• Business trips without an Austrian company invitation.
• Documents in a language other than German or English.

Common causes of delay

Delays usually come from incomplete files, peak-season volumes (summer and the December holidays), requests for extra documents or an interview, and prior consultation with other Schengen states for certain nationalities.

An Austrian refusal notice lists the grounds and explains how to challenge the decision and by when. Compare each ground with your file before deciding whether to challenge it or re-apply.

Before you fly

Travel tips

• Start gathering old residence permit copies early, because ten years' worth can take time to find.
• Ask HR for the NOC last, so it's under a month old when you lodge.
• Get bank statements signed and stamped at the branch.
• Hosts in Austria must use the electronic liability declaration (EVE or GVE); other versions aren't accepted.
• Bring AED cash for the visa fee.
