Switzerland Visa From UAE

A Switzerland visa from Dubai or anywhere in the UAE is decided by the visa section of the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi, not the Swiss Consulate General in Dubai, which focuses on trade. You submit through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, after registering and booking online.

Switzerland isn't in the EU but it is in Schengen, so a Swiss visa works across the Schengen Area and also covers Liechtenstein. The embassy published updated UAE checklists in April 2026.

In short: UAE residents apply for a Switzerland Schengen visa at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, after free online registration and booking. The Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi decides, usually within 15 calendar days; the visa fee is €90, and your residence visa must be valid at least one month after your return.

What's current

Schengen rules in 2026

• Schengen fee: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, unchanged since June 2024. The service provider's fee is charged separately in dirhams.
• Entry/Exit System: fully operational since 10 April 2026. Your first entry is registered biometrically at the border instead of a passport stamp.
• ETIAS: still not running, and no applications are accepted anywhere yet. It will only ever apply to visa-exempt travellers, such as Emirati citizens, not to Schengen visa holders.
• One visa, 29 countries: a visa issued by the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi lets you travel across the whole Schengen Area within its validity and permitted days.

What is a Switzerland Schengen visa?

A Swiss Schengen visa (Type C, or Type A for airport transit) allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The embassy only accepts applications where Switzerland or Liechtenstein is the main destination; files naming another Schengen country as the main destination are not accepted.

Stays over 90 days, study and family reunion are national visas, lodged in person at the embassy in Abu Dhabi on a fixed appointment.

The Schengen Area has 29 member countries, and a visa issued by one lets you move between all of them within its validity and permitted days.

Latest eligibility requirements

These are the current conditions for a Switzerland visa from the UAE, as published by the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi and its service provider.

• Legal UAE residence, with the residence visa and Emirates ID valid one month after your return, or proof of renewal.
• Switzerland or Liechtenstein as your main destination.
• An application lodged no earlier than six months and no later than 15 days before departure.
• A passport issued in the last 10 years, valid three months beyond your departure from Schengen, with two blank pages (EU Visa Code rule).
• Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 for the whole Schengen Area and trip.
• No work without a permit. The embassy states that working without the relevant permit while visiting is strictly prohibited.

The process

Application process: Switzerland visa from Dubai and the UAE

Biometrics

Biometrics requirements

The embassy states that fingerprints are collected from the age of 12 and generally every 59 months from the first recording.

Under EU rules, applicants aged 12 and over give ten fingerprints and a digital photo when they apply. Fingerprints already stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) from an application in the last 59 months can be reused, although the mission may still ask you to attend in person.

Biometrics are now also taken at the border for your first entry under the EU's Entry/Exit System.

Appointments

Switzerland visa appointment process

• No appointment, no submission. Neither VFS Global nor the embassy accepts an application without one.
• Appointment booking is free. The embassy warns against paying anyone for access to counters, and against touts near the VFS centre offering insurance, translations or other 'services'.
• Family members of Swiss, EU or EFTA citizens can apply directly at the embassy, with a mandatory appointment.
• Urgent processing is only offered for high Swiss interests, meaning political reasons or life-threatening medical interventions, and must be requested in writing.

Certain categories can receive a visa free of charge under the Swiss fees ordinance. The embassy isn't responsible for any costs if a visa is refused.

Processing time

The embassy decides most applications within 15 calendar days. Some Schengen states must be consulted for certain nationalities, which can add up to 14 calendar days. If a file has to be referred to the authorities in Switzerland, a decision can take up to 12 weeks.

Emirati passport holders

Visa waiver, EES and ETIAS for UAE citizens

Emirati citizens don't need a visa for Switzerland or Liechtenstein for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders. It replaces passport stamping for non-EU short-stay travellers, including visa holders and visa-exempt visitors such as Emirati citizens, and records your biometric data at your first crossing. Expect a registration step at the border on your first trip.

ETIAS travel authorisation

ETIAS, the EU's travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not operating yet, and no applications are being accepted anywhere. The EU says it will announce the start date several months in advance; the earlier target of late 2026 is widely reported to be slipping into 2027. Once it launches, Emirati citizens will need an approved ETIAS (fee €20, generally valid for three years) before travelling. Schengen visa holders do not need ETIAS. Only use the official EU website when the time comes.

Common reasons for delays or refusal

The EU's standard refusal form lists the grounds a mission can cite. The most common are:

• False, counterfeit or forged documents were submitted.
• The purpose and conditions of the stay were not justified.
• You did not show enough money for the stay and the return journey.
• You have already spent 90 days in the Schengen Area in the current 180-day period.
• An alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) prevents entry.
• Statements or documents were judged unreliable.
• The mission could not establish that you intend to leave before the visa expires.
• No valid travel medical insurance was provided.

Switzerland-specific pitfalls we see

• Naming another Schengen country as the main destination; the embassy won't accept the file.
• A residence visa expiring within a month of your return, with no renewal proof.
• Unsigned applications or documents that aren't genuine. The embassy stresses that applicants are fully responsible.

Common causes of delay

Delays usually come from incomplete files, peak-season volumes (summer and the December holidays), requests for extra documents or an interview, and prior consultation with other Schengen states for certain nationalities.

If your visa is refused

A refusal comes with an official letter explaining the reasons and the appeal process. You have 30 days from receipt. The appeal is a signed, dated letter in German, French or Italian, or in English with a translation into one of them, sent to the Swiss representation or to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). SEM asks for an advance administrative fee of CHF 200, payable as the AED equivalent and refunded if the decision goes your way; the process can take up to 12 weeks.

Travel tips

• Book directly with VFS, which is free, and ignore anyone outside the centre offering paid access.
• Renew your residence visa first if it expires within a month of your return.
• If Switzerland is one stop among several, count nights honestly, because the main destination decides the embassy.
• Swiss prices are high, so show funds that realistically cover your days there.
• Your Swiss visa also covers Liechtenstein.
