Germany Visa From UAE
A Germany visa from Dubai or anywhere in the UAE is decided by one office: the German Consulate General in Dubai. You submit through VFS Global, at the Dubai centre if you live in Dubai or the Northern Emirates, or the Abu Dhabi centre if you live in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain.
Germany also runs a waitlist for appointments, so timing matters as much as paperwork. This guide explains the waitlist, the consulate's own checklist for UAE residents, and the fees and processing times.

In short: UAE residents apply for a Germany Schengen visa (Type C) through VFS Global: in Dubai for Dubai and Northern Emirates residents, in Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents. Appointments come through a waitlist, the visa fee is €90, and the German Consulate General in Dubai decides within up to 15 days.
What's current
Schengen rules in 2026
- Schengen fee: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, unchanged since June 2024. The service provider's fee is charged separately in dirhams.
- Entry/Exit System: fully operational since 10 April 2026. Your first entry is registered biometrically at the border instead of a passport stamp.
- ETIAS: still not running, and no applications are accepted anywhere yet. It will only ever apply to visa-exempt travellers, such as Emirati citizens, not to Schengen visa holders.
- One visa, 29 countries: a visa issued by the German Consulate General in Dubai lets you travel across the whole Schengen Area within its validity and permitted days.

What is a Germany Schengen visa?
A German Schengen visa is a short-stay visa (Type C) for up to 90 days within 180 days, issued by the German mission when Germany is your main destination, meaning where you'll have your longest stay. The consulate lists tourism, business, visits, medical treatment, sports tournaments, transit and cultural events among the covered purposes.
National visas (Type D) for work, study or family reunification are a separate procedure.
The Schengen Area has 29 member countries, and a visa issued by one lets you move between all of them within its validity and permitted days.

UAE residents (expats)
Any UAE resident whose nationality needs a Schengen visa can apply with a valid UAE residence permit. The consulate's checklists ask for the residence permit to stay valid at least three months beyond the end of the visa you request. Where you submit depends on where you live: Dubai and the Northern Emirates go to VFS Dubai; Abu Dhabi and Al Ain go to VFS Abu Dhabi. The consulate notes that some nationals whose passports Germany doesn't recognise may be asked to attend in person.
UAE citizens
Emirati passport holders can travel to Germany visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. See EES and ETIAS below.

Its own checklist. Spouses of German or EU citizens and parents of minor German or EU citizens can walk in to VFS.

Latest eligibility requirements
These are the current conditions for a Germany visa from the UAE, as published by the German Consulate General in Dubai and its service provider.
- A valid UAE residence permit, at least three months beyond the end of the requested visa.
- A passport valid at least three months beyond the visa's expiry, issued in the last 10 years, signed, with at least two blank visa pages.
- Germany as your main destination (longest stay).
- An application lodged no more than 180 days before travel. The consulate needs up to 15 days to process.
- Medical insurance of at least €30,000 including repatriation. Credit card insurance is not accepted.
- Personal funds shown by at least three months of personal bank statements.

Required documents for a Germany visa from the UAE
- Application formCompleted online in VIDEX in English or German, printed, signed and dated. Under-18s' forms are signed by both parents.
- Passport and copiesCopies of the data page and signature page, older passports if relevant, and previous Schengen visas.
- Two biometric photos35 × 45 mm, not older than six months, white background, face covering 70 to 80% of the photo.
- UAE residence permit copyValid at least three months beyond the requested visa.
- Overseas medical insuranceAt least €30,000 with repatriation, all Schengen countries, the whole visa period. Credit card cover isn't accepted.
- Travel itineraryA real hotel booking with full address and booking reference, plus a flight reservation.
- Letter from employer or sponsor (NOL)Position, start date, salary, leave dates, expected return to work and purpose. Investors and partners add the trade licence; dependants add the sponsor's passport and residence permit.
- Proof of financial meansPersonal bank statements for at least the last three months, plus any assets.
- For minorsBirth certificate or custody papers translated into German or English, and a letter of consent with both parents' passport and residence copies.
The consulate publishes separate checklists for tourism, visits, business, medical, culture and sports, and visits with a German or EU family member. Use the one for your main purpose.

- Join the VFS waitlistRegister on the Germany waitlist on the VFS Global site as early as possible, under 'Short Stay' or 'Business'.
- Watch your inboxWhen slots are released you receive an email. The booking link is valid for 24 hours, so check spam too.
- Complete the VIDEX formFill it in online in English or German, then print and sign.
- Build the file to the checklistUse the consulate's checklist for your purpose.
- Attend VFS Dubai or Abu DhabiSubmit documents, give biometrics and pay the fees. VFS forwards the file within one working day.
- Consulate decisionThe Consulate General in Dubai takes up to 15 days. It asks applicants not to send status enquiries.
- Collect through VFSCheck the visa details as soon as you receive your passport.

Biometrics requirements
You give fingerprints and a photo at VFS Global when you submit, in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Under EU rules, applicants aged 12 and over give ten fingerprints and a digital photo when they apply. Fingerprints already stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) from an application in the last 59 months can be reused, although the mission may still ask you to attend in person.
Biometrics are now also taken at the border for your first entry under the EU's Entry/Exit System.
Appointments
Germany visa appointment process
- Germany uses a waitlist rather than open booking. Register on the VFS Global waitlist once you know your plans; the consulate says registered applicants get booking chances in chronological order.
- Each booking notification is valid for 24 hours. Miss it and that slot goes.
- Book the right category: 'Short Stay' for tourism and family visits, 'Business' for work-related travel. The consulate states you may only book under the correct category.
- Spouses of German or EU citizens, and parents of minor German or EU citizens, who live in the UAE can submit at VFS without an appointment.

The consulate's tourism leaflet states that visa fees are paid in cash (AED) on submission. Fees aren't refunded if the visa is refused.
Processing time
The consulate states that processing can take up to 15 days. Apply well ahead, but not more than 180 days before travel. Your passport stays with the consulate throughout; a written withdrawal request cancels the application and returns the passport through VFS within two working days.
Emirati passport holders
Visa waiver, EES and ETIAS for UAE citizens
Emirati citizens don't need a Schengen visa for Germany for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Entry/Exit System (EES)
Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders. It replaces passport stamping for non-EU short-stay travellers, including visa holders and visa-exempt visitors such as Emirati citizens, and records your biometric data at your first crossing. Expect a registration step at the border on your first trip.
ETIAS travel authorisation
ETIAS, the EU's travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not operating yet, and no applications are being accepted anywhere. The EU says it will announce the start date several months in advance; the earlier target of late 2026 is widely reported to be slipping into 2027. Once it launches, Emirati citizens will need an approved ETIAS (fee €20, generally valid for three years) before travelling. Schengen visa holders do not need ETIAS. Only use the official EU website when the time comes.
Avoid these
Common reasons for delays or refusal
The EU's standard refusal form lists the grounds a mission can cite. The most common are:
- False, counterfeit or forged documents were submitted.
- The purpose and conditions of the stay were not justified.
- You did not show enough money for the stay and the return journey.
- You have already spent 90 days in the Schengen Area in the current 180-day period.
- An alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) prevents entry.
- Statements or documents were judged unreliable.
- The mission could not establish that you intend to leave before the visa expires.
- No valid travel medical insurance was provided.
Germany-specific pitfalls we see
- Fake or 'dummy' bookings. The consulate warns that false or falsified documents, including fake bookings, lead to refusal and may have further consequences.
- Credit card travel insurance in place of a dedicated policy.
- Booking a Business appointment for tourism, or the other way round.
- A residence permit that expires less than three months after the visa ends.
Common causes of delay
Delays usually come from incomplete files, peak-season volumes (summer and the December holidays), requests for extra documents or an interview, and prior consultation with other Schengen states for certain nationalities.

A German refusal notice sets out the grounds and your options to challenge the decision, with the deadline. Read it alongside your original file before deciding whether to challenge it or re-apply.

Travel tips
- Join the waitlist before every document is final, because the booking link lasts only 24 hours.
- Use a genuine, verifiable hotel reservation with full address and booking reference.
- Buy a standalone Schengen travel policy; credit card insurance isn't accepted.
- Make sure your NOL states the date you'll resume work.
- Don't chase the consulate during the 15-day window, which it explicitly asks applicants not to do.
