France Visa From UAE

A France visa from Dubai works differently from most Schengen countries. Every French visa application in the UAE is decided by one office, the consular section of the French Embassy in Abu Dhabi, and France-Visas currently lists one submission point for UAE residents: the VFS Global centre in Abu Dhabi.

So if you live in Dubai, Sharjah or any northern emirate, plan a trip to Abu Dhabi for your biometrics appointment. Emirati citizens don't need a visa for short stays. Everyone else needs a Schengen visa (Type C), and this guide walks through each step.

In short: UAE residents apply for a France Schengen visa by completing the France-Visas form online, then submitting it with their documents at VFS Global in Abu Dhabi, which France-Visas lists for residents of all emirates. The visa fee is €90 plus a €30.33 VFS fee, and the French Embassy in Abu Dhabi decides.

What's current

Schengen rules in 2026

• Schengen fee: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, unchanged since June 2024. The service provider's fee is charged separately in dirhams.
• Entry/Exit System: fully operational since 10 April 2026. Your first entry is registered biometrically at the border instead of a passport stamp.
• ETIAS: still not running, and no applications are accepted anywhere yet. It will only ever apply to visa-exempt travellers, such as Emirati citizens, not to Schengen visa holders.
• One visa, 29 countries: a visa issued by the French Embassy in Abu Dhabi lets you travel across the whole Schengen Area within its validity and permitted days.

What is a France Schengen visa?

A French Schengen visa is a short-stay visa (Type C) issued by France when France is your main destination, meaning where you'll spend the most nights. It covers up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen Area, for tourism, private and family visits, business travel or short medical stays.

The application form is completed on France-Visas, the French government's official visa website. Stays longer than three months, including study and work, need a French long-stay visa.

The Schengen Area has 29 member countries, and a visa issued by one lets you move between all of them within its validity and permitted days.

The process

Application process: France visa from Dubai and the UAE

1. Confirm France is your main destinationCount your nights, and check you're not visa-exempt.
2. Complete the France-Visas formCreate an account, fill in the short-stay application and print it with its receipt.
3. Book at VFS Global Abu DhabiPay the €30.33 service fee online while booking, one appointment per applicant, then print the confirmation.
4. Build the file in checklist orderMatch dates across flights, hotels, insurance and your NOC.
5. Attend in Abu DhabiArrive about 10 minutes early for security. Only applicants enter, with limited exceptions, and phones and other electronics aren't allowed inside.
6. Pay the visa fee and give biometricsThe visa fee is paid in AED at the centre; fingerprints and photo if you're 12 or over.
7. Track and collectFollow the file under 'My applications' in your France-Visas account, then collect with your receipt, send someone with your authorisation, or choose courier.

Biometrics

Biometrics requirements

Everyone lodges in person except those exempt from fingerprinting: children under 12, whose file is lodged by a parent or legal guardian, and applicants holding a 'VIS' visa issued within the last 59 months. VFS Abu Dhabi accepts submissions Monday to Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.

Under EU rules, applicants aged 12 and over give ten fingerprints and a digital photo when they apply. Fingerprints already stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) from an application in the last 59 months can be reused, although the mission may still ask you to attend in person.

Biometrics are now also taken at the border for your first entry under the EU's Entry/Exit System.

Appointments

France visa appointment process

• France-Visas asks short-stay applicants to plan so they secure an appointment at least three months before departure. Applications can't be lodged more than six months before travel.
• Book one appointment per applicant, including children, and print the confirmation letter.
• Only applicants may enter the centre. Exceptions are a companion of a child aged 12 to 18, a companion of a person with reduced mobility, or someone the consulate has approved in advance.
• Electronic devices, large bags and sealed envelopes aren't allowed, and the centre has no storage.
• At the centre you can choose the standard service or an optional premium service.

France-Visas states that amounts collected are kept even if the visa is refused. Optional VFS services cost extra.

Processing time

France-Visas states there is no accelerated procedure and the visa section can't shorten processing. Allow at least 15 days from submission; individual cases and peak season can take longer.

Emirati passport holders

Visa waiver, EES and ETIAS for UAE citizens

France-Visas confirms that Emirati citizens don't need a visa for France or the other Schengen States for stays under 90 days.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders. It replaces passport stamping for non-EU short-stay travellers, including visa holders and visa-exempt visitors such as Emirati citizens, and records your biometric data at your first crossing. Expect a registration step at the border on your first trip.

ETIAS travel authorisation

ETIAS, the EU's travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not operating yet, and no applications are being accepted anywhere. The EU says it will announce the start date several months in advance; the earlier target of late 2026 is widely reported to be slipping into 2027. Once it launches, Emirati citizens will need an approved ETIAS (fee €20, generally valid for three years) before travelling. Schengen visa holders do not need ETIAS. Only use the official EU website when the time comes.

Common reasons for delays or refusal

The EU's standard refusal form lists the grounds a mission can cite. The most common are:

• False, counterfeit or forged documents were submitted.
• The purpose and conditions of the stay were not justified.
• You did not show enough money for the stay and the return journey.
• You have already spent 90 days in the Schengen Area in the current 180-day period.
• An alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) prevents entry.
• Statements or documents were judged unreliable.
• The mission could not establish that you intend to leave before the visa expires.
• No valid travel medical insurance was provided.

France-specific pitfalls we see

• Expecting to lodge a France file in Dubai, when France-Visas lists VFS Abu Dhabi as the submission centre.
• Arriving without the printed France-Visas form or appointment letter.
• Choosing to lodge an incomplete file after signing VFS's incomplete-file note.

Common causes of delay

Delays usually come from incomplete files, peak-season volumes (summer and the December holidays), requests for extra documents or an interview, and prior consultation with other Schengen states for certain nationalities.

If your visa is refused

A French refusal comes with a notice listing the grounds, the appeal routes and the deadline. Follow those instructions exactly, and compare each ground with your original file before deciding whether to appeal or re-apply.

Before you fly

Travel tips

• Plan a day in Abu Dhabi. You'll travel there for the appointment even if you live in Dubai.
• Start early. France-Visas recommends securing the appointment at least three months before departure.
• Leave your phone with someone outside or in the car, because the centre has no lockers.
• Arrange your folder in checklist order to speed up the counter check.
• When you collect your passport, check the name, passport number, dates and number of entries on the visa.
