Planning an Italy trip from the UAE? Unless you hold an Emirati passport or another visa-exempt nationality, you need a Schengen short-stay visa before you fly. The key detail for an Italy visa from Dubai or anywhere in the UAE is jurisdiction: the emirate that issued your residence visa decides where you apply.

Residence visas issued in Dubai and the Northern Emirates go to the Consulate General of Italy in Dubai through VFS Global. Residence visas issued by the Government of Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra) go to the Embassy of Italy in Abu Dhabi through BLS International. This guide covers both routes.

In short: Most UAE residents apply for an Italy Schengen visa (Type C) at VFS Global in Dubai if their residence visa was issued in Dubai or the Northern Emirates, or at BLS International in Abu Dhabi if it was issued in Abu Dhabi. The visa fee is €90 for adults, and the Italian mission makes the decision.

Schengen rules in 2026

  • Schengen fee: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, unchanged since June 2024. The service provider's fee is charged separately in dirhams.
  • Entry/Exit System: fully operational since 10 April 2026. Your first entry is registered biometrically at the border instead of a passport stamp.
  • ETIAS: still not running, and no applications are accepted anywhere yet. It will only ever apply to visa-exempt travellers, such as Emirati citizens, not to Schengen visa holders.
  • One visa, 29 countries: a visa issued by the Italian consulate or embassy lets you travel across the whole Schengen Area within its validity and permitted days.

UAE residents (expats)

You can apply in the UAE if you hold a valid UAE residence visa. Where you apply is fixed by the issuing emirate, not by where you live today: a visa issued in Sharjah goes to Dubai even if you've since moved to Abu Dhabi. The Embassy's checklists explain that GCC citizens, who don't hold a residence visa, can prove Abu Dhabi residence through the issuing authority on their Emirates ID or with supporting documents.

UAE citizens

Emirati passport holders don't need a visa for Italy for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You still pass Schengen border checks, including the Entry/Exit System registration explained below. See EES and ETIAS below.

Treatment at public or accredited private Italian facilities. The Embassy notes this procedure can take up to 90 calendar days.

Invitations from Italian authorities or recognised organisations for political, scientific or cultural events.

National visa (Type D)

Study, work, family reunification and other stays over 90 days, handled separately.

These are the current conditions for a Italy visa from the UAE, as published by the Italian consulate or embassy and its service provider.

  • A valid UAE residence visa. VFS Italy's Dubai checklists ask for it to be valid at least 90 days from your intended return date.
  • A passport valid at least 90 days after the requested visa expires, with at least two blank facing pages (Embassy of Italy in Abu Dhabi checklist).
  • Italy as your main destination (most nights), or your first point of entry if nights are equal.
  • Correct timing: the Embassy only processes applications lodged no more than six months and no later than 15 calendar days before travel, and returns applications outside that window.
  • Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen states for the whole trip.
  • Enough money for the trip and clear ties to the UAE, such as your job, business, studies or family.

The process

Application process: Italy visa from Dubai and the UAE

  1. Confirm your jurisdictionDubai or Northern Emirates residence visa: Consulate General in Dubai via VFS Global. Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or Al Dhafra: Embassy in Abu Dhabi via BLS International.
  2. Pick your categoryTourism, business, family visit or another purpose. Use the checklist for your main purpose.
  3. Prepare and cross-checkYour form, flight reservation, hotel, insurance and NOC should show the same dates.
  4. Get an appointmentThrough the VFS Global Italy portal (Dubai) or the BLS International portal (Abu Dhabi tourism). Abu Dhabi business applicants can attend BLS without one, according to the Embassy.
  5. Attend in personSubmit documents, give fingerprints if you're 12 or over, and pay the visa and service fees.
  6. Wait for the decisionThe file goes to the consulate or embassy, and your passport stays there until a decision is made.
  7. Collect and checkCollect from the centre or by courier, then check the name, dates and number of entries on the visa.

Biometrics requirements

Italy's missions collect fingerprints at VFS Global in Dubai and BLS International in Abu Dhabi, as part of your in-person submission.

Under EU rules, applicants aged 12 and over give ten fingerprints and a digital photo when they apply. Fingerprints already stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) from an application in the last 59 months can be reused, although the mission may still ask you to attend in person.

Biometrics are now also taken at the border for your first entry under the EU's Entry/Exit System.

Appointments

Italy visa appointment process

  • Dubai and Northern Emirates: appointments through VFS Global Italy. In March 2026 the consulate confirmed the Visa Application Centre operates from The Gate, DIFC, with dedicated business-visa appointments.
  • Abu Dhabi emirate: tourism appointments through the BLS International portal. Business applicants can go to the BLS centre at Nation Towers without an appointment. Submissions run Monday to Friday, 9 am to 3 pm, and passport collection 9 am to 5 pm.
  • Family members of EU citizens can request an appointment directly with the Embassy's visa office by email.
  • Premium lounges and other paid extras at the centres are optional; the Embassy states they are not required to submit an application.

Visa fees are not refunded if the visa is refused. Some applicants, such as certain family members of EU citizens, may qualify for a fee waiver.

Processing time

Italy's missions usually decide within 15 calendar days. VFS Italy notes that processing varies by nationality, so applicants whose nationality needs prior consultation with other Schengen states should allow extra time. Your passport isn't returned until the decision is made.

Emirati passport holders

Visa waiver, EES and ETIAS for UAE citizens

Emirati citizens can visit Italy visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for tourism, family visits or business. Longer stays, work or study require an Italian national visa.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders. It replaces passport stamping for non-EU short-stay travellers, including visa holders and visa-exempt visitors such as Emirati citizens, and records your biometric data at your first crossing. Expect a registration step at the border on your first trip.

ETIAS travel authorisation

ETIAS, the EU's travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not operating yet, and no applications are being accepted anywhere. The EU says it will announce the start date several months in advance; the earlier target of late 2026 is widely reported to be slipping into 2027. Once it launches, Emirati citizens will need an approved ETIAS (fee €20, generally valid for three years) before travelling. Schengen visa holders do not need ETIAS. Only use the official EU website when the time comes.

Common reasons for delays or refusal

The EU's standard refusal form lists the grounds a mission can cite. The most common are:

  • False, counterfeit or forged documents were submitted.
  • The purpose and conditions of the stay were not justified.
  • You did not show enough money for the stay and the return journey.
  • You have already spent 90 days in the Schengen Area in the current 180-day period.
  • An alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) prevents entry.
  • Statements or documents were judged unreliable.
  • The mission could not establish that you intend to leave before the visa expires.
  • No valid travel medical insurance was provided.

Italy-specific pitfalls we see

  • Applying at the wrong centre for the emirate that issued your residence visa.
  • Lodging outside the six-month to 15-day window; the Embassy returns these applications unprocessed.
  • Business trips without a clear invitation from the Italian host, or one that doesn't match your role.

Common causes of delay

Delays usually come from incomplete files, peak-season volumes (summer and the December holidays), requests for extra documents or an interview, and prior consultation with other Schengen states for certain nationalities.

If your visa is refused

If Italy refuses your visa, the refusal notice lists the grounds and explains how, where and by when you can challenge the decision. A re-application that answers each ground directly is often the practical route.

Before you fly

Travel tips

  • Check the issuing emirate on your residence visa first. It decides VFS Dubai or BLS Abu Dhabi.
  • Read the consulate's news page before you plan. In early 2026 Italy's Dubai consulate announced a temporary suspension and then a gradual restart of visa services at short notice.
  • For business visas, ask your Italian host for an invitation on letterhead that names you, your role, the dates and who pays.
  • On multi-country trips, make sure Italy genuinely has the most nights and your bookings show it.
  • Carry printed copies of your insurance, hotel bookings and return ticket for the border.
